It is very sad to lose a close colleague who is in his scientific prime.
It is also very shameful to realize the poor coverage that local media and scientific institutions, including his own, have devoted to the decease of such a renowned researcher, at an international level.
We live in a parochial country.

I only learned Toni’s death recently, one year after, and was extremely shocked and saddened. Toni is extremely well known internationally and made tremendous contributions to organic geochemistry and paleoclimatology throughout his career. He made critical and fundamental contributions to understanding the alkenone paleothermometer and some of his publications are classic and everyone needs to cite in their publications on alkenone related topics. I only found Toni’s death a year ago when we were trying to recommend him as a reviewer for a paper to be submitted. I agree entirely with message above that Toni should have received much greater coverage and should have been commemorated warmly and formally. My deepest condolences to Toni’s family and friends.
Rest in peace! Toni. You were the best!
